Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Tallow
What is Suet? Tallow? What's the difference?
Suet is the raw, hard fat from around the kidneys of cattle. Tallow is what you get after suet has been gently rendered and purified for use in skincare.
Tallow has been used for centuries in skincare because of its nourishing properties. Rich in fatty acids like oleic and stearic acid, tallow helps moisturize and protect the skin, supporting a healthy barrier and soft, supple texture.
Where is your Suet Sourced From?
Our grass-fed suet comes from four trusted farms in British Columbia’s Okanagan and Thompson-Nicola regions. These local partnerships ensure high-quality, sustainable tallow while supporting small family farms. Every one of our tallow products reflects this commitment, delivering nourishing skincare and bolstering the livelihoods of dedicated farmers who share our values.
Does tallow smell like beef?
Tallow on its own has a very mild, neutral scent which is often described as slightly creamy or buttery. When properly rendered, it shouldn’t smell like ground beef!
Why is tallow loved for skincare?
Tallow is loved for skincare because it closely mimics the natural oils found in healthy skin, allowing it to absorb easily and provide deep, lasting hydration without feeling heavy. When rendered from grass-fed suet, tallow is rich in skin-supporting nutrients, including vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, which help nourish the skin, support elasticity, and promote a healthy skin barrier.
Its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make tallow especially appealing for sensitive or acne-prone skin, helping to calm irritation and maintain balance. Simple, effective, and time-tested, tallow offers a straightforward, no-frills approach to skincare that focuses on nourishment and skin compatibility rather than unnecessary additives.
Why does grass-fed matter?
Grass-fed cattle typically produce fat that contains higher levels of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K2. Since tallow is concentrated, the quality of the cow’s diet directly impacts the nutrient density of the final product.
Grass-fed suet generally contains more omega-3 fatty acids, higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and a more balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. For skincare, this can mean a more anti-inflammatory profile and better support for the skin barrier.
About Our Products
Who are your products for?
Mill District Naturals skincare products are designed for everyone! Whether you have normal, dry skin, acne-prone skin, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions, we likely have a product that can help!
Are your products good for acne?
Absolutely! Many of our customers have shared that our whipped tallow balms are effective for acne-prone skin, with the Frankincense & Lavender blend being a particular favourite.
Frankincense, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, works in unison with lavender’s antimicrobial and calming benefits. Together, they complement tallow’s naturally antibacterial and skin-soothing qualities, creating a balanced and supportive formula for healing acne.
Are your products good for dry skin?
Yes! Our tallow-based products are deeply nourishing and naturally rich in fatty acids that mimic your skin’s own oils. They help restore moisture, strengthen the skin barrier, and leave dry or sensitive skin feeling soft, smooth, and protected.
What would you recommend for sensitive skin?
Many of our products are formulated for those with sensitive skin in mind. Our whipped tallow balm base is a blend of Tallow, which is incredibly soothing, and Jojoba Oil which usually is a great oil for those with sensitive skin.
For those who cannot tolerate any level of scent, we recommend using our Unscented Whipped Tallow Balm. Alternatively, our Vanilla Bean and Latte scents are infusions, without essential oils additions and are also tolerated well. However, it's always better to err on the side of caution and try unscented first!

My tallow arrived melted!
Our tallow products are made with natural ingredients and no stabilizers, so they may soften or melt in transit during the warmer months. If this happens, don’t worry, it’s purely cosmetic. Whipped textures may settle into a balm-like consistency, but they’re still completely safe, effective, and great to use. If you're unsure how to restore the texture, just send us a message. We’re happy to help!
Do you ship to the USA?
At this time, we do not due ship to the USA due to the De Minimis exemption being lifted.
